ZESTOLOGY – Episode 272
Last Sunday I went to visit a good friend, Anita. She just moved into a new home, and she and her daughter are fixing the place up. It has been so much fun for them. It was fun for me to be with them again.
Today, for FRIDAY FITNESS AND HEALTH, I want to share my thoughts from a podcast Anita sent me. It’s an interview with Mike Berland, author of Maximum Momentum.
Mike talked some about the coronavirus. And he talked some about politics. But the part that really got me thinking and taking notes was when he started talking about his personal health.
He tracks everything. Everything.
And this fit right in with our discussion yesterday on data. Gathering data, and using that data to create more of what I want. Right?
I want to do this, and in a more organized way than I was anticipating when I was blogging yesterday’s post about data. Because, I am still getting those dark days, right? They are less frequent, because I’ve learned how to better manage my mind. But I still get them – and they really overwhelm me. And the goal isn’t to eliminate them entirely, but I want to learn what I can from those dark days, and to feel like I have control.
After I had my third child, I was really feeling out of my mind. Emotions that I couldn’t account for were really affecting my relationship with my husband, with my children, with myself. And it all felt so out of control. My mother in law suggested I put up a calendar on our wall, and put an X on the days on the calendar when I felt the most out of control. The idea was to then try to find a correlation. What was happening consistently on those days I’d marked with an X? Was I on my period those days? Was Bryant working late those days? What did I eat on those days? Did I go outside or not on those days?
That is, essentially, what Mike Berland is talking about here. Tracking everything, gathering data, finding patterns, learning from the bad days as well as the brilliant days. All of it.
And I want to do just that. Every day. And maybe in a crazy obsessed way – just for three months while I gather data. I am really embracing the SCIENTIST. Does that make sense? And what data do I want to be gathering every day?
- What food I eat, breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- Where I am in my menstrual cycle
- What vitamins I take
- What time I go to sleep
- What time I wake up
- Exercise – what, how long, what time of day
- How much time I spend outside
- How much time I spend on social media
- How much time I spend in pursuit of spiritual experiences – prayer, scriptures, uplifting conversations, etc
- Who I have been in contact with that day
- Entertainment – movies, music, etc
- And then, of course, what emotions overall I am feeling that day
And, for that last one, I am going to use a scale, using the emotions I want to ultimately feel in my life, as listed on DAY #2. We are going way back. But I think my goals for what emotions I want to experience the most consistent in my life have remained the same. Let’s look at those:
- Complete – Steady, useful, in control of me and the situations around me.
- Confident – Satisfied with how I showed up in the world, outward focused.
- Peace – Calm, a feeling that I am exactly where I am supposed to be, doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing.
I need to think through how to record this data daily in a way that is easy for me to compare and to use. Maybe something like this:
